Tuk Tuk's

Anyone who has travelled to Asia will be familiar will the sensation that is the Tuk-Tuk.  Tuk-Tuk's are little taxi's that zip people from A to B in record time, they run on natural compressed gas and are the most economically efficient taxi achieving 50 miles to the gallon.

The Fuel

Tuk Tuk's run on natural gas which is a mixture of Hydrocarbons and is produced from gas wells or in conjunction with crude oil production.  Natural gas, like most alternative fuels, is known for its clean burning qualities and produces 90% less carbon monoxide, 60% less nitrogen oxide, and 30% less carbon dioxide than petrol.  However, because of the gaseous nature of this fuel, it must be stored as a compressed gas onboard these Tuk-tuk's.

Tuk Tuk's - Asia to the UK

Tuk Tuk's dominate the streets of Thailand, Cambodia, India, Laos, Vietnam and Malaysia.  Tourists love them, and a trip to Asia is not complete without a crazy tuk tuk ride.  Although the top speed is only 35mph, it feels like 100mph.  There are fast, exciting and can zip through the biggest traffic jams without a problem. Safety is not a feature of Tuk Tuk's in Asia; however Tuk Tuk's have been adapted and safely brought to the UK.

Europe's first fleet of Tuk Tuk taxis have hit Brighton.  The 12 tuk tuk's have been launched on Monday 10th July by Dominic Ponniah. Each tuk tuk has been uniquely designed and modified to meet UK safely standards.  The improvements cost £2,500 per vehicle, with features such as seatbelts, anti-roll bars, side protection and enhanced break pipes being fitted to each vehicle.  The tuk tuk rides cost £2.50 per adult and £1.50 for a child, holding a maximum of 3 people at a time.  The service is hoping to be introduced across the UK by 2007, hitting cities such as London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Edinburgh.
