Drive your LPG car in France, Italy and the rest of Europe
Summer is here!  Well, at least it is in Europe.  Do you have a holiday planned for you and your LPG car?  If you are taking an LPG vehicle to Europe, there are some things you need to know...

LPG in Europe

Travelling with an LPG vehicle is a dream; you can achieve almost double the mileage for the same cost as a petrol vehicle can.  Your pound can go twice as far but can you?

Getting to Europe in an LPG Vehicle

There are no restrictions on going to Europe with an LPG vehicle; however you have to be careful about which method you take to get there.  There are two ways of getting a vehicle across the English Channel – Ferry and Eurotunnel.  LPG vehicles are not permitted in the Eurotunnel.  LPG vehicles are not dangerous, they are completely safe.  The restriction is based on the time of building; not enough vehicles ran on LPG to justify an assessment of risk.  However, LPGA has since proven that it is safe and are pushing Eurotunnel to amend their policy, hopefully LPG cars will soon be able to use the Eurotunnel.  However, for the time being, LPG vehicles can only cross by using the cross-channel ferry services.

It is wise to take with you your vehicle log book, insurance certificate, and your LPGA approved conversion certificate.  Speed ferry crossing require LPG vehicles to present an LPGA approved certificate before travelling so don’t get caught out.  If you are planning a trip across the channel click here to book you and your vehicle on a ferry.  Also, by agreeing to the terms and conditions, you must switch off your LPG tank whilst on the vehicle decks.  P&O Ferries confirmed that LPG cars are aloud to use the ferry crossing services.

"I can confirm we will carry Dual Fuel vehicles and those that run on gas on all of our routes.  Please be advised drivers should isolate the gas supply when the vehicle is left on the car deck."

Filling up in Europe

LPG is readily available in Europe, however it is more commonly known as Autogas or GPL.  When driving on a motorway, road signs will be marked “+GPL” if the station supplies LPG.  However, when you are in the station forecourt the pump will normally be marked Autogas and is located separately from the petrol and diesel pumps.  A full list of LPG stations in Europe can be found by clicking on the country name in the table below.

LPG Adapters

When travelling to another country, you will need an LPG adapter.  Some service stations supply them, however if you wish to take your own contact Fuelture and we will arrange one for you.  Different countries use different adapters but there are three main types.

The following table shows which adapter is used in various countries in Europe.

Although the adapters vary slightly, the same basic rules apply to all three types.

1.      Fit adapter carefully.

2.      Don’t fit to fuel nozzle, fit to car.

3.      Make sure it is secure before filling the car with Autogas.

Instructions for use may be in another language and useless you can understand, please ask for help from station staff or other Autogas users.
