10 typical questions
For those new to LPG, it can seem like a steep learning curve when exploring the options. Here are responses to 10 common questions asked by motorists inquiring about an LPG conversion in the UK:

1.      Can my engine be converted?

Yes, as long as it's a petrol engine that doesn't use direct injection technology, and has a compatible valve system. Currently, diesel engines are unsuitable for LPG conversion.

2.     How much lower is the fuel cost for vehicles converted to run on LPG?

Fuelture quote a 40% compared with the Petrol equivalent.

3.     How much does an LPG conversion cost?

This will vary according to vehicle make and model. While a typical 4-cylinder engine costs about £1700, a V-8 unit could exceed £2000. If you want a more precise estimate, just ask us for a quote.

4.     What about LPG availability?

There are currently over 1300 stations selling LPG in virtually every county across the UK. The important point to remember is that your vehicle can still run on petrol if you run out of LPG. You can find locations of LPG stations in your area or along a route at www.fuelture.com.

5.     How long will LPG remain low cost?

The cost of LPG is currently less than half that of petrol because of much lower fuel duty. The UK government has agreed to support LPG by practically freezing the duty on LPG, and more importantly, the UK government has committed to provide three years of advance notice on changes to the fuel duty differential between LPG and other conventional fuels (petrol and diesel). This is good news for you!

6.     Will my LPG conversion be reliable?

The new generation of LPG conversions are extremely reliable. There have been major technological advances in recent years including advanced self-learning engine management systems for LPG.

7.     Can my engine still run on petrol after gas conversion?

Fuelture says yes! Practically all conversions leave the vehicle as a dual fuel. Motorists can switch their engine to run on either LPG or petrol - the latter is practical if the vehicle runs low on LPG.

8.     After LPG conversion, is my engine greener than petrol?

Fuelture says yes! The LPGA advises that gas-powered engines reduce C02 emissions by 20% compared with petrol. Another benefit is that the engine emits cleaner exhaust fumes than petrol and diesel.

9.     How many miles can I get to a tank?

It depends on the tank size and the engines fuel economy. Because of the lower hydrocarbon content LPG vehicles achieve 20% less miles per litre so you will get less miles for each tank. Standard conversions should provide a tank that enables you to cover between 200 and 300 miles on LPG. Remember however that you can always revert to Petrol if you are caught short.

10.  Are the servicing and resale costs of my car higher after an LPG conversion?

The annual servicing requirements for an LPG system are straightforward. They may add as little as £35 extra a year. While a cleaner burning engine may not extend the service intervals, the engines are more likely to last longer. The LPGA reports that LPG-powered cars don't command a higher resale price at auctions. However, the private market normally adds a healthy premium.

In many cases (not all cases), getting an LPG conversion is a great idea for both your wallet and the environment!
