Mr. Collins is based in Germany with the Army and can easily take his LPG car to Europe. Mr. Collins has no issues refuelling even when using the LPG adapter. "The guy from the installation centre has been brilliant and the aftercare package is very good. "
Jim Collins, Soldier Date of Conversion: 26th May 2006 Name: Jim Collins, Shipton Profession: Soldier in the Army Primary Purpose of Car: Personal Annual Mileage: It's quite horrific because I live in
Germany, it's
around 16,000miles Is this your first LPG conversion? Yeah Did you have any initial concerns about converting? Yes, when I thought about it I was in a rag. Initially I had a few phone calls and emails about my questions and queries with LPG. The concerns were the sitting of the tank, I wanted the petrol tank replaced with an LPG tank which you couldn't do because of the make and model of my car. That meant that I had to go for the original option which was getting the spare wheel taken out and I wasn't too impressed with that but there was no other option available. Then there were issues with cost price which we managed to barter down and I got it cheaper. The follow-up plan has been a bit of an issue, I live in Germany so I need to come back over to the UK to deal with any issues with it. How did you overcome those concerns? I needed to know what it would be like to have an LPG car so I got it done to see what it was like. Now knowing what it is like, would you still convert? Yes, because it is potentially cheaper but it is not as good as I imagined it but it is cheaper than petrol. I'll get a couple of years out of my car now and I'd stick with a Range Rover if I bought a new car. I'd buy an LPG Range Rover, but I would make sure that it had a quality LPG system in it. I've heard some of the horror stories with dodgy conversions. How did you find the whole conversion process with Fuelture? You don't know all the answers to the questions. Sales had to ask the technician who wasn't the technician who worked on the car. The information your technician gave was different from the guy who worked on the car. Wouldn't recommend a conversion to someone with a smaller car, it would take a long time to recoup the cost of the conversion. . What was your experience of the actual conversion like? The guy from the installation centre has been brilliant. How easy has it been to run your LPG car? Well, like I say, don't get me wrong it's great to only pay £30 to fill it up. Has refuelling been an issue? There's an LPG Station down the road from where I live. In Holland it's cheap as chips. But in Germany, he charges more because he's the only one in the area. I'm using an adapter; it screws on and is really easy to use. How has your car been running since the LPG conversion, any problems? The Engine Control Unit has the wrong programme in it. Nicholson McLaren replaced the programme and it's fine now. Is there anything that you would change about your conversion? That the company provides a very good service once you get over the initial shock of the price! Personally I wouldn't recommend it to anybody with a smaller engine size (under 4 litre), as the cost savings would take a very long time to recoup. I would also tell them the pros and cons of LPG that don't come from a text book or test track, like the actually mileage per litre and the complications of filling, the lack of LPG service stations, especially on motorways etc. Personally for me though it was the best choice, but it may not be for them. What was the key factor about LPG that made you convert? Only because I've got such a big engine car, cost was the main reason for converting. It cost me £100 to fill up my tank on petrol. £30 to fill up on LPG is great; just wish I could get more miles from it. I get 170-190 miles to the tank, and I drive long motorway driving which can be a pain. Why did you choose Fuelture to convert your car to LPG? It offered a slightly more expensive service than most of the other companies I had contacted, but after some friendly banter with the sales staff, we managed to reduce the price to a more acceptable level. The after care package seemed very good. See more Land Rover LPG Conversions
